A Summer Escape to Our Farmhouse in Kotkhai

This summer, my family and I embarked on our annual retreat to our farmhouse in Kotkhai, Himachal Pradesh. Nestled in the serene mountains, Kotkhai offers a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. As an English language teacher, I often find solace in the simplicity and natural beauty of the mountains, a sentiment echoed by many great poets.

“Nature never did betray the heart that loved her,” wrote William Wordsworth, capturing the essence of our summer sojourn. The verdant landscapes, the chirping of birds, and the gentle rustling of leaves in the cool breeze provide a perfect backdrop for relaxation and reflection.

This trip is more than just a vacation; it is a tradition for our family. My husband, child, and I make this journey to ensure our child remains connected to our roots and appreciates the simple joys of mountain life. There is something profoundly grounding about spending time in our native village, where the pace of life slows down, allowing us to reconnect with nature and each other.

During our stay, we indulge in various activities that bring us closer to the land and its people. Mornings start with a leisurely walk through the apple orchards, where the crisp air invigorates our spirits. My child loves helping with the farm chores, learning the values of hard work and patience. As Robert Frost wisely said, “The woods are lovely, dark and deep, but I have promises to keep, and miles to go before I sleep.” This resonates deeply with our experience, reminding us of the commitments we have made to our family and heritage.

Evenings are spent around a bonfire, sharing stories and reminiscing about the past. The simplicity of these moments is akin to the words of John Muir, who said, “In every walk with nature, one receives far more than he seeks.” Indeed, our summer holidays in Kotkhai are not just about escaping the city but about finding ourselves amidst the natural splendor of our homeland.

In a world that is increasingly fast-paced and disconnected, these visits to Kotkhai are a cherished ritual. They are a gentle reminder of our roots and the beauty of a life lived in harmony with nature. As an English language teacher, I find inspiration in these surroundings, allowing me to bring a piece of that serenity back to my students in the city.
